What Is The Role Of A Sports Psychologist In Football?

John Nassoori is a freelance journalist who writes about performance psychology’s role in sport for publications including the BBC and The Guardian. He tells stories on subjects ranging from the first World Cup-winning psychologist to weightlifting beauty queens and produces The Mind Room, a weekly newsletter covering psychology-focused stories from around the world of football.

In today’s episode I chat with John Nassoori, a freelance writer and sports journalist for BBC Sport and The Guardian, in the UK.   We go on to discuss his research into football or soccer psychology, at both the elite end and in grassroots football.  We chat about perceptions of sports psychology, mental health and mental toughness in football.  We also touch on the difference between a sports psychologist and other people who are working in football who often get labelled as sports psychologists.   How sports psychology is used currently in football and what the future holds for the domain we also talk about.

What You Will Learn In This Episode:

  • That football or soccer psychology is still in its infancy.
  • The role of the Sports Psychologist is misunderstood and requires ongoing education to football clubs decision makers, coaching staff and support teams.
  • It takes an outlay of £45k+ to gain the necessary qualifications to qualify as a HCPC Registered Sport and Exercise Psychologist.
  • The term Sport and Exercise Psychologist is a protected term.
  • Mind Coaches, Mental Performance Coaches, Clinical or Counselling Psychologists have a role to play in football or soccer however their route to providing support in this environment is different to a Sport and Exercise Psychologist.
  • It is important to check out the credentials of anyone practicing psychology whether they are seeking to enhance performance or improve mental health.
  • Mental toughness in football is similar to resilience, it’s about helping people withstand pressure.

How Can I Help My Children Who Suffer With Nerves Before They Compete?

By working with David Charlton, you and your organisation will be better equipped to rise to modern day challenges and better informed to thrive on and off the pitch, course or court.  Where he inspires individuals and teams to:

    • Cope with pressure and challenges more effectively
    • Maintain positive mental health
    • Compete with confidence more often
    • Manage your emotions better
    • Improve your commitments levels

David is a Mental Toughness Practitioner, as well as a Health Care and Professions Council (HCPC) Registered Sport and Exercise Psychologist.  He has successfully supported athletes, teams and organisations for over 10 years in order to ensure that they perform at their maximum more often.

He has a comprehensive knowledge around the development of Mental Toughness, a plastic personality trait, which determines or limits people to deal effectively with change, challenges and stressors. In today’s climate, during the Coronavirus pandemic this quality is becoming more and more valuable to individuals, teams and organisations.

In this short solo episode, I answer a question posed by a parent.  “How can I help my son, a goalkeeper who gets very grumpy and nervous the evening before a match?”  Many children across a range of sports face this challenge, often talking themselves into performing poorly before they go out to play a match or compete.  They let nervousness win.  Today’s episode is set up to help parents where I share some ideas on how you could adapt your approach so that you help your children.

    Key Learning

    • Consider if you are providing emotional support or if you are drawn into problem solving?
    • Offer your children some space.
    • Help your children to find ways to switch off from their sport.
    • Be careful not to over-coach your children.
    • Consider if practice the day or evening before is fun and relaxing or actually fuelling anxiety and perfectionism.

In this short solo episode, I answer a question posed by a parent.  “My son has had a tough time recently and often talks about not wanting to continue with football.”

Sadly, this question appears to be a common one at present and shows no signs of going away potentially down to the pressures placed on children at a young age, both in their sport and education.  I do my best to give sporting parents one idea on how you can help them and open up a conversation on the topic.

      Key Learning

      • Ask your child why they play football or sport.
      • Find out what they love about sport.
      • Check-in with yourself, why would you like your children to play sport?
      • Now check if you share common ground, if there is a big difference in your motivations I’m hoping you’ll question your approach and consider how you communicate with them.

How is Psychology used in Professional Football Clubs

        Jack Hicks-Flynn

Jack Hicks-Flynn, CPsychol, is a Chartered Sport & Exercise Psychologist registered with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC) and British Psychological Society (BPS). He has a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, a Master’s in Applied Sport & Exercise Psychology, as well as the professional Qualification in Sport & Exercise Psychology. Jack is the Lead Sport Psychologist at Portsmouth Football Club and specialises in the delivery of psychological provision to professional and amateur athletes of all ages and backgrounds, with the aim of improving performance and personal wellbeing.

Additionally, Jack works extensively in high-performance settings in both the sporting and corporate domains, notably, he has recently started consulting to West Ham United FC where he looks to combine his passion football and psychology in the Premier League.

Today I chat with HCPC Registered Sport Psychologist, Jack Hicks-Flynn about his love for the profession.  He goes on to offer helpful insights into to the role of a sport psychologist in professional football clubs, drawing on experiences of working as an applied practitioner and a researcher in Southampton FC, Luton Town FC, Portsmouth FC and West Ham United FC.

We go on to discuss the complexity of our role, cultural beliefs in football, common misconceptions about the role of sport psychology, we also chat about interpersonal confidence and the importance of it in a football environment and a lot more.

What You Will Learn In This Episode:

        • It is vital to gain a deep understanding of the football club values and culture.
        • A sport psychologist spends time on the pitch working collaboratively with coaches to improve players.
        • Building relationships with the multi disciplinary team (MDT) is essential.
        • Jack highlights the 3 R’S, rapport, relationships and respect as important aspects to succeed in the role.
        • He helps players raise their level of self-awareness so that they have the ability to think more flexibly in different situations (psychological flexibility).
        • Players have to deal with selection biases, relationships with coaches, parental influences, contractual issues, agents which can have a huge impact on their experience within the sport.
        • It’s ok to be vulnerable at times which culturally go against what people consider mental toughness to be.
        • Statistics are a vital part of football, tracking distance covered, walking distance etc, however how this is communicated with individual players is vital unless confidence can be eroded.
        • It’s worth considering that statistics can provoke comparisons with other players and a level of toxicity.
        • Mental health screenings, mental health action plans and a clear referral process is vital in clubs.
